Zephaniah
The introduction below is from
Chuck Smith's Old Testament Study Guide,
available from all good Christian bookshops (contact
DCF
for details):
Zephaniah and
Jeremiah were the last of the pre-exilic prophets – prophets
before the Babylonian captivity Haggai, Zechariah, and
Malachi were the post-exilic prophets who prophesied after
the captivity. The prophecy of Zephaniah is during the reign
of Josiah but before the fall of Nineveh, the capital of
Assyria.
Zephaniah
takes his lineage back to King Hezekiah, his great, great
grandfather. He was born during the reign of Manasseh and
prophesied during the reign of Josiah, who had a fairly
successful spiritual reign in Judah. Some commentators
suggest that perhaps Zephaniah had an influence on Josiah.
Zephaniah
was also prophesied of the future and the great battle of
Armageddon, when God will assemble the nations and the
kingdoms into the Valley of Meggido, that He might pour His
indignation and His fierce anger upon them. He also declared
God will establish His kingdom after the judgement, and it
will be a day of rejoicing and shouting.
