Romans
Romans has been described as ‘Paul’s definitive statement of
Christian doctrine’. Paul starts by showing that, no matter
who you are, or how righteous you think you might be, we
have all fallen short of God’s perfect standard revealed in
His Law. We have a major birth defect; we are all born with
a sinful nature, and consequently, we sin. Jesus came to
‘set us free from this body of death’ (7:24) and put into us
a new nature, viz. His Spirit. Once we have repented there
is no more condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus
(8:1 / 8:35-39).
Paul then spends three chapters dealing with the question of
Israel; has God finished with them? God forbid! is Paul’s
answer (11:11). Their eyes (as a nation) have been
temporarily blinded, but only until the fullness of the
gentiles has come in (11:25). Then all Israel will be saved
as has been prophesied throughout the Old Testament
(11:26-27). Paul closes with an urgent call to a serious
faith; we are to be transformed (12:2), no longer walk in
darkness (13:13), and cause no offense (14:21). This is
non-negotiable, and simply our logical response to such a
great salvation! (12:1)
