Judges
The introduction below is from
Chuck Smith's Old Testament Study Guide,
available from all good Christian bookshops (contact
DCF
for details):
The book of
Judges covers the historic period of the nation of Israel
from the death of Joshua the beginning of the kings. It is
accepted that the time period is about 300 to 400 years.
The book
gets its name from the 13 different judges that God chose in
the time of spiritual declension. They were leaders but were
never fully empowered by the people as rulers. This was an
interim period between Joshua and the establishing of a
monarchy when Saul became the first king over Israel.
During this
time Israel had 13 declensions, 13 revivals, 13 periods of
captivity, and 13 periods of deliverance from the oppression
of the enemy. It’s a sad, tragic story of their failure to
consistently worship and honour God. .
