Bible Study Verse by Verse teaching Joshua

Joshua

The introduction below is from Chuck Smith's Old Testament Study Guide, available from all good Christian bookshops (contact DCF for details):

Joshua is the first book of the Bible to be named after a person. Joshua’s name means “Yahweh is salvation” and is the same name as “Jesus” in the New Testament. So we find in Joshua a very interesting type of Jesus Christ, and Joshua led the people into the inheritance.

Moses led the Israelites out of Egypt to the border of the Promised Land, but he couldn’t lead them in. Moses stands for the law, but the law can’t lead you into the fullness of God’s blessings for your life. The law can lead you to the border, but it can’t take you in. Joshua took the Israelites into the Promised Land and now there is a new relationship based on faith. They’re going to have to begin by stepping out in faith, coming into this land that God had promised.

The Israelites’ conquest of Canaan is typical of Christians entering into a glorious victor over the flesh in and through Jesus Christ. But Joshua could only lead them so far. He led them into the conquering of the land, but he never brought them into a rest. That is something that was reserved for Jesus Christ. Once Christ made the work of salvation complete through His death upon the cross, He brought rest in our salvation, our eternal life. Jesus has done for us what Joshua could not do. Joshua brought them into the land, not into the rest. Jesus has brought us a glorious rest.
