John
John’s gospel not only presents Jesus as ‘God manifest in
the flesh’ (‘the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us’),
it is an intentional defense of that fact. John wrote his
gospel toward the end of the first century, probably after
he had returned from Patmos (where he had been exiled and
received the ‘Revelation’). Just as Jude had warned, people
had crept into the church denying the person of Jesus,
denying His deity. John writes his gospel as a powerful
rebuttal to this heresy, showing clearly that Jesus claimed
to be God, and proved it to be so. It was this that so
incensed the Jewish leaders. Much of what John records is
the ‘battle’ between Jesus and the religious leaders. John
takes the first 11 chapters to cover 3 ˝ years, building to
the climax of ‘Palm Sunday’ – the only day in His ministry
Jesus actually presented Himself as King to Israel. The next
8 chapters cover just one week – the most important week in
human history.
John’s gospel is heptadic in structure, arranged around 7 ‘I
AM’ statements, 7 miracles, 7 witnesses etc. The best
summary of this gospel is found in John 20:27-31
“And
many other signs truly did Jesus in the presence of his
disciples, which are not written in this book: But these are
written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the
Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through
his name”
