Hosea
The introduction below is from
Chuck Smith's Old Testament Study Guide,
available from all good Christian bookshops (contact

for details):
The book of
Hosea is the first of the Minor Prophets. They are called
minor because they are generally shorter in length than the
major prophetic books.
Hosea’s ministry was concurrent with that of Isaiah. Hosea
is prophesying to the northern kingdom of Israel, while
Isaiah was prophesying to the southern kingdom of Judah.
The name
Hosea means “saviour.” The story of Hosea was a tragic
personal story. God called him to marry a prostitute. After
they had several children, she left her family and sold
herself into prostitution again. God called Hosea to buy her
back out of her slavery to prostitution and to forgive her
and love her.
There are
important eternal principles set for us by the prophet
Hosea. As he spoke to the nation of Israel, he speaks to
every nation who has forsaken the Lord and has adopted other
gods. What is true of a nation is true of an individual. If
you forsake the Lord and worship other gods, you’ll be
brought to desolation. But, if you will return to the Lord,
you can experience the blessings of God, the fruitfulness,
the forgiveness, and the grace.
