Ezra
The introduction below is from
Chuck Smith's Old Testament Study Guide,
available from all good Christian bookshops (contact
DCF
for details):
The book of
Ezra is the first of the post-captivity books. It pertains
to an important part of the history of the nation of Israel
– their release from captivity. At the time that Cyrus gave
the decree to build the temple, Ezra wasn’t even alive. It
is not until chapter 7 that Ezra comes into the story.
The first six chapters deal with the repatriation of Israel
after the Babylonian captivity. Chapters 7 through 10
summarize Ezra’s involvement as he encouraged the people to
complete the restoration of the temple and a spiritual
reformation.
Ezra wasn’t
just interested in finishing God’s temple, he cared about
the spiritual condition of the people. He knew their
rejection for God’s law caused them to be led away captive;
and now as God was giving them another chance, he didn’t
want them to make the same mistakes.
