Bible Study Verse by Verse teaching Ezekiel

Ezekiel

The introduction below is from Chuck Smith's Old Testament Study Guide, available from all good Christian bookshops (contact DCF for details):

As Judah was failing to the powers of Babylon, there were three separate sieges in which the Babylonians conquered Jerusalem and took many captives. In the first siege, Daniel the prophet was taken as a captive. In the second siege, Johoiachin was taken captive, along with Ezekiel. There was a third siege in which Jerusalem was utterly destroyed, and they carried away the remaining people at that time.

Ezekiel became a prophet in Babylon at the same time that Daniel was a prophet. Daniel was in the capital, in the city of Babylon itself as a statesman in the Babylonian kingdom; whereas Ezekiel prophesied about 200 miles north of the city of Babylon, where the river Chebar flows into the Euphrates.

Ezekiel was prophesying to the captives, and when he began his prophecy Jerusalem was still standing. At this same time, Jeremiah was prophesying to the Jews who were still in Jerusalem. Their messages were the same: the judgements of God are coming upon His people because they have forsaken Him, and they have turned to other gods.
