Esther
The introduction below is from
Chuck Smith's Old Testament Study Guide,
available from all good Christian bookshops (contact
DCF
for details):
If the books of
the Bible were placed in chronological order, the book of
Esther would come before the book of Nehemiah. The book of
Esther fits halfway between the rebuilding of the temple and
the rebuilding of the city of Jerusalem.
The book of
Esther covers a period of 12 years, giving the historic
setting for the Feast of Purim. The Feast of Purim is
celebrated by the Jews to the present day, in the twelfth
month of the Jewish calendar, equivalent to the month of
March.
In the story
of Esther, although it doesn’t mention the word God, His
overruling providence is seen throughout the entire book.
The Jews hold this as one of the most important books in the
Bible as a beautiful story of God’s preservation of His
people. We see God working far in advance, setting
people in specific places in order to save the Jews from
this attempted extermination.
