Acts
The Acts of the Apostles is the conclusion of a two part
volume penned by Dr Luke, believed to have been intended as
the trial documents required to accompany Paul as a result
of his appeal to Caesar (Acts 25:11). It gives the history
of the birth of the church, from a small insignificant group
of men and women (known as ‘the way’), to a movement that
turned the world upside down. The first portion of the book
focuses on Peter (chapters 1-12), while the second half sees
Dr Luke befriend a tentmaker and ex Pharisee formally called
Saul (chapters 13-28). In his gospel, Luke relied on
eyewitness accounts of that which he records, however in
Acts, Luke himself is an eyewitness of much of the action.
The historical accuracy is unsurpassed; even the four
anchors cut loose (in Acts 27:29) have now been discovered
just off the coast in Malta, just where Dr Luke said they
would be!
The book of Acts shows that without ceremony, incense,
projection screens and sound systems the gospel was spread
by men and women who “continued steadfastly in the apostles'
doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in
prayers” (Acts 2:42).
