2nd Kings
The introduction below is from
Chuck Smith's Old Testament Study Guide,
available from all good Christian bookshops (contact

for details):
At the end of
First Kings, God was dealing with the northern kingdom under
the reign of Ahab with his wicked wife Jezebel. They had
brought the northern kingdom of Israel into its lowest state
morally and spiritually as they led the people into idolatry
– the worship of Baal – introduced by Jezebel. And thus,
Israel was sinking into a state of great spiritual apostasy.
As Second
Kings continues, we are told of the divided kingdom of
Israel. The various kings of the north and south are
depicted, and their reigns are evaluated based on whether or
not they were following after God and walking in the way of
David, the prototypical righteous king over Israel.
Second Kings
ultimately tells the story of God’s people turning away from
Him and being carried off into captivity. During this time,
we see God using various prophets, such as Elisha and
others, as He warns them of the consequences of their
choices.
