2nd Corinthians
Paul visited the church at Corinth on three occasions, and
wrote (it is believed) four letters in total. The first
letter had been sent shortly after he had founded the church
there. However, because of problems among these young
believers, Paul was forced to write a letter of reproof
(which we know as 1st Corinthians). This was followed by his
second visit to address these issues in person. Although it
has not survived, a third letter (sometimes referred to as
the ‘severe letter’) was sent – which Titus subsequently
reported had been received well. But all was not well;
certain people within the fellowship had starting casting
doubt on Paul’s authority, who did he think he was? What
qualifications did he have?
For the sake of the gospel, Paul now writes his forth letter
in which he gives account of his ministry (ch1-5), appeals
to the true believers (ch6-9), and concludes with an amazing
defense of his position and authority, silencing his
critics. In amongst the above there are some priceless gems
of doctrine not found anywhere else in the New Testament.
Sometime after this Paul made a final visit to the baby
church he had fathered and deeply loved.
