1st Samuel
The introduction below is from
Chuck Smith's Old Testament Study Guide,
available from all good Christian bookshops (contact
DCF
for details):
This book
presents the personal history of Samuel who was the last of
the judges. The book of Samuel is a transitional period in
Israel’s history. The nation moved from a theocracy to a
monarchy. However, it wasn’t truly a theocracy because they
weren’t following God as King. They were moving from
an anarchy – quoting the book of Judges, “And every man did
that which was right in his own sight” – into a monarchy,
having an earthly king. This book ushers in the period of
the kings among the children of Israel.
First Samuel
covers the life of Samuel, the life of Saul, and the life of
David. This book in the Septuagint is called The First
Book of the Kings. First and Second Samuel and First and
Second Kings in the Septuagint are called First, Second,
Third, and Fourth Kings.
