1st Corinthians
This is Paul’s letter to a church in need of reproof.
Corinth was the most important city in Greece in Paul’s day;
it was a major sea port and entertained visitors from east
and west. Its commerce and wealth were immense, so luxury
and excess pervaded every area of life. In the midst of all
this temptation, the church had failed in numerous areas.
But Paul, as a loving father had such compassion for those
whom he had begotten by the gospel (4:15) and desired that
they would follow his example.
Paul starts with a call to unity (1:10), then the difference
between man’s wisdom and God’s (3:19), emphasising the need
for humility (3:18). Paul exposes the issues of fornication
(ch5) and law suits (ch6) among the believers – things that
should not be. He gives advice on sexual conduct (ch7) and
issues of conscience (ch8), before again reiterating the
servant hood and godly zeal that should characterise all
believers (ch9). Paul urges them to learn from the mistakes
of the past (ch10), addressing church order (ch11), and
spiritual gifts (ch12/14), the greatest of which is love
(ch13). The resurrection chapter(15) – our hope - is a high
ground in the NT.
